To start with, flowers were not the only way to make an impact. Foliage was very important in the mass plantings. First is the variegated shell ginger with knockout roses. If you have clay soil can I suggest you add lots of organic material? Clay soil is a common problem in vegy gardens. The same can be said of Sandy so.
